One of the main important parts of media production is the amount of money and funding that goes towards it. For example in 2015 the movie Martin had a great amount of funding than most movies in that period. Due to companies giving a good amount of funding to movies they have the power to have a hand in what happens during productions to their funding. without British Cinema, Hollywood would not have as many sales as they do without their partnership. The media has a bunch of big bosses controlling production and having a say in some decisions made. Big monopolies fund films and the smaller production housing, this causes them to gain power in an area where they don't have much knowledge over. Although it can be good because it eliminates any form of competition, it, unfortunately, lets the people who fund it have a say so that the film won't be as authentic as the producers would like. Any room for creativity and authenticity of the film may be altercated or not allowed due to the big bosses not allowing certain things. The media has always been an unreliable source, filled with factual news and misleading information. We have seen a surge in fake news with the new Coronavirus we have seen this year. Much misleading information about cases or that cases have been decreasing, which is untrue. Big monopolies control the media and the News, they only let the audience see and hear what the big companies want them to see or hear. This causes some media platforms to be bias and unreliable, overall not a good source for information. The main stream media can lie about the number of cases of the symptoms to not create panic or to make it seem as if Corona is not as bad as it is. This is the big companies monitoring what you can and cannot see to prevent them from losing money from fear of going out. The mass media has always been controlled by wealthy businessmen, since they spend their money on the funding then they can pick and choose what they want the media to see. Often in films, these big businessmen create stereotypes for minorities and often control the media to make it seem like minorities are dangerous. Thus normalizing a certain stereotype that is false to a group of people creates a form of racial bias. They have the power to make or break how people perceive certain races or groups of people, often putting them in a negative light. With such power of censoring the media to see only what you want them to see, you can generalize the information about groups or races that is false. People believe these things because of what they see in the media and the news. The news always mentions the race of the person who commits the crime when it's a minority but you never see in the news " white male suspect..." instead they just refer to him as a male suspect. Once everyone is aware that the media is controlled by big men in suits, then people will realize that the media is just pitting everyone against each other because of their race or gender. They will soon realize that those stereotypes they saw on the TV or News were all a plan to shine to negative light onto those minority groups.

Audience behaviors affect the media industry significantly, these media platforms work on their consumers and rely on their consumers to keep the platform running. This greatly impacts the movie industry, if consumers watch a trailer and do not enjoy they will most likely not watch the movie. The audience behavior on what the industry is putting out gives the media industry an idea of what consumers want and what consumers don’t want. The whole idea of a media platform is run by the consumer without the consumer the media platform is nothing, thus strongly relying on the audience's behaviors and opinions. If the audience feels as if a movie is offensive, insensitive, or just flat out not good that will create a bad reputation for the side movie. There are many examples in which audiences have disliked a trailer or a snippet of an upcoming movie that the number of people who did not enjoy the trailer made filmmakers refilm an entire movie.
For example in 2020 a movie was released called sonic the hedgehog. originally the movie trailer was released in 2018 but because of such harsh backlash and criticism, they took down the trailer and redid the entire movie. Consumers complained about how unauthentic sonic to look like and how they would not be watching the movie and how disappointing it was. They re-casted the movie and listened to their audience about how the CGI was terrible and redid the entire CGI. After spending almost $95, million to remake the movie, Sony only got a 6.5 out of 10 in rotten tomatoes. The audience's behavior greatly affected how the movie was consumed to the point where filmmakers re-did an entire movie to satisfy the consumers. This was the first time Sony films has ever done anything like this, Sony films usually have a good reputation with movies that do well at the box office. Sony has put out movies like Spiderman, venom, bad boys, and even James Bond. They have reputable movies in which are classics in many households, so for them to have made an entirely new movie because people did not enjoy the trailer means that they value customer consumption. When a company highly valued customer consumption they rely on the customer's behavior and how they react to what they put out and change it around that. Film companies want to make money if they want to make money they have to notice what the consumer likes and does not like and model their company after what makes the most money. For example, Sony‘s highest-grossing film in 2002 was Spiderman, which made $400 million at the box office. Two years later they made a Spiderman two which grossed $373 million at the box office this was followed up Buy four more Spiderman movies which tend to have been their highest grossing movies by far. Sony is set to release a fifth Spiderman movie on November 20 21 1/6 in October 2022. This creates a pattern that Sony knows that their highest-grossing movie that is a classic will always make them money. The consumer enjoys that movie and will constantly watch all movies having to do with that superhero. Nowadays it’s easy to get feedback from the audience and see what they think about film companies releasing a project. With things available like YouTube, the TV TickTock and Instagram things are easily marketable. Companies can easily get feedback from their consumers that way and estimate how good the movie is going to do at the box office before it is even released. Given that most people have a phone or a laptop the film media is easily accessible, you can easily watch a trailer to see if you will enjoy the movie or not. Things like Netflix Hulu and Amazon video help you watch old movies and when you finish them give you the choice to rate how you enjoyed the movie so they can recommend movies similar to that genre or topic. This gifts insight feedback to the streaming companies in the movie companies as they get an idea of what consumers are enjoying nowadays or not even paying mind to. Thus the behavior of consumers greatly affects the changes in the media industry whether it be film, music, print, radio, or video games consumer feedback and behavior is what helps better the company or make the company fall apart. With social media and technology being at everyone’s disposal it’s easy to give fast and quick feedback or reviews on movies, music, or video games. If enough bad feedback on the movie can make the producers re-cast and redo an entire movie then that should be enough to prove that consumer behavior does change the media industry. That will be an example for companies. Although some companies refuse to listen to their audience and only cater to those who care about their products and do not tend to those with constructive criticism. Most companies value the behavior of their audience which greatly affects them. The extract provided from Black Mirror includes editing, sound, camera shots, and Mise-en-scène. All of these elements put together to create an immersive experience for viewers, feeling as if they are inside the scene. Even if it was filmed in 2016, the editing and camera shots make it feel as if it’s straight from the ’80s, what pulled it together was the costumes and the music playing in the background as well as the slang the actors used that were widely used in the 80s. Producers have to incorporate a bit of every element to create the perfect scene, to make it seem like the actors are actually in the scene and it makes the viewers enjoy what they are watching. From the jump cut to the fade-out, all camera shots and the editing techniques were used in this video to create a captivating effect on the storyline of the character in an 80’s club. They create a scene that makes it feel like everyone is back in the ’80s, they do this by incorporating 80’s style, fashion, and music. They use close up camera shots, two shots, and even over the shoulder shots.
For sounds, they used a mixture of low distant 80’s music, background conversations, and an ambient mysterious background song while the main character is analyzing her surroundings. When they move to the scene where she is playing video games, the audios switch to the video game noise while the club music becomes noticeably low for the character to be approached by a bystander who starts the conversation. It then switches to the scene where the main character is being approached by a young lady who pretends to know her, as this scene begins the music becomes a part of the background as she tries to escape a pestering date. The camera pans to both young ladies, as it switches back and forth between characters as they have a conversation. It often shows the audience over a shoulder shot, as the girls pretend like they know each other it pans to the other female character and focuses on her and not the main character. At the beginning of the scene as she is observing her surroundings you can hear the radio play and give information of things related to the ’80s are giving the audience more of a feeling that they are immersed in the 80’s aesthetic. The mise-en-scène is prominent for each scene, they perfect the makeup and costume to correspond with the theme of the 80’s aesthetic they were going for. Everyone in the scene through the clip provided was wearing 80 style clothing as well as some even having 80s themed makeup and hair. When the clip first begins we see o;d vintage cars coming into the scene as we see a busy area with fun partying teenagers. Yorkie walks in front of a dinner and a furniture store on her way to the club, she turns her attention to the bickering couple of teenagers who enter it as she follows right behind. As they enter the club the lighting changes and it gives off purple and blue hues. They even go as far as to include an 80’s style coke bottle prop. The actors have big frizzy and puffy styled hair and big tacky clothing. They often have big jackets with padded shoulders and a lot of chains or gems on the jacket itself. Everyone else seems to be fitting in with the 80’s vibe except for Yorkie who is styled less 80’s and a more modern vintage version of that aesthetic. In the scene where Yorkie and the stranger approach her in the arcade, you can see the various arcade machines and hear their noises in the background as well as the music. Thus this clip includes many elements that pull it together. From the lighting and costume to the camera angles and editing. The mise-en-scèneis detailed and helps you become immersed in the 80’s scene they are trying to create with the props and lighting. The camera shots panned from a long-shot to a master shot, they even had a few clips the camera shot as handheld zoom, track, and crane. Each sound and lighting had its play in making the scene what it was, while the camera shots and angles amplified the tone and mood the producers wanted to create for the audience. Every camera angle and shot can make or break the scene to give it the mood that wants to be created by producers. Notes comparison:
S: Both notes have similar information on scenes and wording. They were also put in the same order and organized slightly the same. Both notes were similar in the way that the elaboration of the movie was the same. D: One of the main differences I noticed was that my note format was different than the one of Cambridge. Mine was a bit sloppy and unorganized while Cambridge was neat and put together. Cambridge put it into categories while I simply did the notes to cater to my understanding, While I am still new at camera terminology and describing shots. While Cambridge is fully educated and knows all the correct terms. In the end, Cambridge's notes were more clear and understandable while mine were catered to my own needs and new understanding. response comparison: S: Both responses included the same information and use similar information from the notes. Both my response and Cambridge was in detail and well described. Overall both responses sounded similar but not the same. Both responses were organized and answered the questions asked/ D: There were not many differences in the response, they were along the same lines and both did a good job at answering the question. I would say that mine needed a bit more information on the examples but other than that they were pretty similar Social media has become the biggest thing to happen in the last few decades, its become a great way to communicate with family, friends and even meet people worldwide. It's the perfect platform for marketing a product and get it out there to the public. Social media has become the perfect platform to market new music and help newer artists come up. For example there is a feature on the application Instagram that lets you share your favorite song to your followers, that could be exposing a new person to the song or artist helping them be discovered by others. Not only that, in recent years Apple Music and Spotify have made it easy to listen to whatever song regardless of your location. Back in 2016, for every minute of the day, around 38,000 hours worth of music were being listened to on Spotify. There are many more streaming platforms that have been created in the last 10 years that help catagorize the music by genre or artist which better helps the discovery of an artist or song. These streaming platforms have made it easier for consumers to listen to what genre they like or specific artists, some platforms even curate a personalized playlist for the customer based on what they listen to. This is new and different for the music industry, it helps introduce newer artists and music to those who listen to the same kind of genre or artist. A study created by LOOP has found that a playlists account for 31% of listening time, in comparason to albums which only account for 22% of listening time. There is no more need to promote new music on billboards when a celebrity can make a simple instagram post that their new album is out. The news spread like wildfire as all their fans rush to listen and tell all their own followers about it. This makes new artists not sign with any big brands or a manager, rather they choose to release their own music on Spotify or soundcloud. As to where years ago artists had to have their demos listened to in hopes a label would sign them. The new wave of social media has drastically helped how music is consumed and shared, helping both the artist and the listener.
